I've had my eye on a Keychron keyboard after I saw a bunch of reviews on various tech sites over the past year or two. It seemed quite hyped and the original Kickstarter project blossomed out to a full blown company with a bunch of various keyboards on offer. I was forced to be patient as it took forever for them to bring out a German version. I contemplated getting the US layout but it's just too much hassle when regularly writing in German.
Two weeks ago, they finally sent a notification mail that a German version of their V2 keyboard was available so I jumped on it. I'm glad I did. It thankfully was delivered quickly and this thing is super easy to set up. Further, I specifically wanted this keyboard as it is optimized for the Mac and has the respective layout. If you are a Windows person, it comes with keycaps for that too. It's also chargeable via USB-C which is nice as I am charging my Macbook with that cable anyway. Whenever the battery runs out, you can just plug it in for a bit and it charges up quickly. You can also use it via cable instead of bluetooth but I prefer being without cable. I also picked up the RGB version which has a ton of options in terms of lighting for the keyboard. It is gimmicky but my four year old loves the light show and gets such a kick out of it. He could sit in front of it for ages just playing with the various color options. This is not something essential for me but for 10 Euro more, it was worth the joy my kid gets out of it.
I went with the brown switches which are kind of clicky but aren't too obnoxious. This is not a keyboard to use in the office with any of the various keys. It is definitely "clicky" and I have what is supposedly the quietest version. I can't imagine a room full of people at the office with these keyboards. It would be unbearable. At the same time, I love typing on this at home. I love the feeling of the keyboard and I can touch type so much better on this than the Macbook keyboard or the bluetooth Apple keyboard. Both those are fine but this is simply better and much more tactile. I also don't seem to have problems with the angle and height of the keyboard. There were complaints online in the reviews that the positioning of the keyboard lead to wrist and finger pain. Many recommend getting a wrist pad to have in front of the keyboard. I don't need this yet. I may just get one to avoid any issues which could creep up. They cost hardly anything. But for now, I don't feel that this is a problem I would end up having. I've already typed a ton on this keyboard and all is good on that front. I do use it with the feet kicked out on the back of the keyboard to angle it a bit.
My only complaint so far is that the frame of the keyboard is kinda flimsy. I don't get any flex or have any issue with it just sitting there on my desk. Nevertheless, it just does feel kind of cheap. You can't tell by looking at it that it is plastic but when you have it in your hands, it's clear that you are holding a bunch of plastic. This should have no effect on the durability because again, I don't plan on travelling with this keyboard. It is dedicated to my home office set up. There is a metal frame option but the reviews also said that it is only the outside edges which wouldn't really change anything in regards to durability. This is a choice you have to make for yourself. I do have to also admit that the packaging was a bit beat up when it arrived. The keyboard was fine but the outside of the box was a bit unpleasant. This is surprising as there was really durable bubble wrap around the outside of the box. I am presuming this damage was from the warehouse in China. They are probably stacked somewhere and no one is paying attention to the boxes. Other reviewers have commented the same. This is no big deal for me but I wanted to note it as well.
As mentioned I am late to this party. Mechanical keyboards have been around forever and gamers seem to love them. I just decided to give it a try as I am typing so much lately and wanted to get something a bit more tactile. This thing has grown on me and fast. If you are on the fence about a mechanical keyboard or don't even know that you want one, I would recommend checking this out. I am really enjoying it and am typing far faster than before.
